Calling all girl actors to play 12 year old

The commitment to the role is substantial but so are the rewards. Two talented youngsters are needed to round out the cast of the Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon, presented by Theatre North West in April.

Two talented youngsters are needed to round out the cast of the Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon, presented by Theatre North West in April.

The call is for two girls who can convincingly play a 12-year-old to share the role of Laurie, a character central to the play.

Those children auditioning can be older but must be credible as a 12 year old. This is a great opportunity for young actors to perform with professional actors from across Canada.

Ted Price, founding artistic director of Theatre North West, will direct the show presented April 19 to May 6 with possibly more shows added to meet demand.

"Lots of my favourite productions at Theatre North West have included youngsters from the community," said Price. "All that enthusiasm and determination is just a joy to see."

Brighton Beach Memoirs is a touching portrait of family life. The Jerome family is crowded into their small Brooklyn home. It's 1937 and it's all about dealing with relatives constantly underfoot. In the midst of the overstuffed life is 15-year-old Eugene, a Yankees fan and fledgling writer whose ambitions include writing the great American novel, pitching for the Yankees and seeing a girl naked.

Auditions to fill the part of Laurie will be held in February.

Parents should be aware of the commitment involved to be a part of Brighton Beach Memoirs. Rehearsals will begin April 2.

Parents may obtain information and audition package at Books & Co, 1685 Third Avenue.
