Boogie with the Stars, the New Year's Eve event at the Civic Centre, brought $36,000 to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.

The funds raised from the dance competition portion of the evening were targeted for a diagnostic SPECT CT Scanner, with a price tag of $1.4 million.

More than 350 people attended the popular gala evening presented by the Dance North Ballroom Dance Club and featured a buffet dinner and the dance competition, which was followed by a dance with band Pink Champagne on stage.

During the dance contest, there were seven local celebrities performing including, winner Brad Bonner with instructor Paz Milburn, Franca Pertucci with instructor Lee Goats took second and Kelli Moorhead with instructor Peter Weedon took third. Also competing was Dexter Tabora with his instructor Leslie Farella, Rebecca Lear with her instructor Phil Thalmann and husband and wife team Norm Coyne and Candice Manahan under the instruction of Milburn and Weedon.

"We are thrilled to be the charity of choice for this particular event," said Judy Neiser, chief executive officer of Spirit of the North. "What a wonderful way to bring in 2014. The generosity of the dancers and their supporters, the attendees and Paz and Peter is overwhelming. Thank you."

In collaboration with Northern Health, the SPECT CT represents the first of many pieces of diagnostic equipment that is greatly needed to provide the best of care close to home in the North, Neiser added.
