A new blues promoter in town wants to give back to the community by holding a fundraiser for the Association Advocating for Women and Children (AWAC) Sunday, Dec. 4 at The Twisted Cork.

Ivan Paquette, Karl Standeven, Dawn Boudreau, Theresa Jordan and Steven James are set to perform at the bluesy fundraiser and Theresa Healy shares some of her poetry.

Barbara Ann Senft, better known as Dovey of Dovey's Blues News & More, said AWAC has a significant impact on the community and she wants to support their worthy cause.

"The women and children that AWAC provides support to are extremely marginalized and vulnerable and have very little access to the support in the community and clothing and the items they need that can enrich their lives," said Marianne Sorensen, executive director of AWAC.

The association supports vulnerable women and female youth by providing emergency shelter, drop in services, women's transitional housing as well as outreach support to those in need to about 150 individuals each month.

"I want this to be a fun, uplifting, positive event to raise awareness for AWAC and what they do for the women in the community," said Senft. "I'm really quite pleased with all the community support."

Riot and Plateau Clothing stores have offered an incentive of a 25 per cent discount for those who come into their stores with a donation of good quality used winter clothing for AWAC clients as part of Senft's fundraising effort.

"This is a general fundraiser and we're hoping for donations of personal care items, clothing and supplies that will go directly to the women," said Sorensen. "Any monetary donations we receive will go to programming for the women, supplies -- things that they need or materials for activities or life skills."

Suggested donations include shampoo and conditioner, warm socks, winter outerwear, pajamas, thermal underwear, Tim Horton's card, hoodies, arts and crafts supplies.

The show is on Sunday, Dec. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Twisted Cork, 1157 Fifth Avenue. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door at the Twisted Cork and Studio 2880.
