The beats of the world will pound the walls of Art Space on Saturday night.
Rhythmic folk ensemble Barefoot Caravan will arrive from the Okanagan to headline the night of global music, joined by local Persian-jazz ensemble Navaz on this double bill.
"Knowledge of the arts does not belong only to the nation from which it came, it belongs to us all," said a band statement. "Barefoot Caravan, like many people, believes in the power of music in influencing positive change. It is a gateway to knowing ourselves, a window to the soul. This observation of ourselves is why music is so important in the world today."
Barefoot Caravan is a five-piece acoustic ensemble with a heavy emphasis on percussion and vocal harmonies. They are led by Angela Roy who teaches drumming and singing in public schools in a wide range of communities. When the band isn't on the evening stage as they tour the towns of the Central Interior, they will be at select schools bringing their world beat to local kids.
The band will also be in Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, Smithers, Terrace and Prince Rupert in the next four weeks. See their Facebook page for full details.
Navaz is led by Prince George's guitar star Eric Tompkins and exotic vocalist Neda Jalali, with accompaniment by string, wind and percussion friends.
"Eric's jazz and Latin guitar stylings and his interest in world music compliments Neda's beautifully haunting voice," said a band statement. "The mystical poetry of Hafez and Rumi, traditional Persian melodies, jazz, Latin and blues rhythms are all part of the Navaz experience."
They have three albums and have been featured on stage and radio around the province.
Tickets are $20 each and are on sale in advance at Books and Company, or at the door while supplies last.
