There will be Aliens Among Us at Exploration Place - an exhibit on the province's invasive species coming to P.G. from the Royal B.C. Museum.

The exhibit runs Feb. 17 to April 27, and allows guests to see some of the province's best-known and least-loved invasive species.

"There are more than 4,000 alien species in the province and that number grows each year," said Gavin Hanke, curator of vertebrae zoology at the Royal B.C. Museum. "Some of these aliens are invasive -- they spread quickly, threaten native wildlife and are hard to control."

American bullfrogs, Scotch Broom, small mouth bass and purple loosestrife are a few of the featured species in Aliens Among Us.

The exhibition tells the stories of how the invasive species arrived in the province, what individuals can do to protect their communities and how these aliens fit in, or don't, with their environments.

"Common Tansy is an alien species that has invaded the Hudson Bay Slough right next door to us," said Amanda Tisseur, deputy director of Exploration Place. "This is a plant with lovely yellow flowers and fern-like leaves. It's out competing native species. Because it looks pretty and not necessarily like it doesn't belong, most people have no idea that this invasive species is changing the nature ecosystem."

The exhibit will help people learn about invasive species and how they impact the community and province.

Royal B.C. Museum's Aliens Among Us is traveling through the province until 2013. For more information visit http://www.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/TravellingExhibitions.
