What is that smell?

There may be something rotten in Denmark, but Kalamalka Lake is a little odiferous as well.

In the past, the popular North Okanagan lake has made the National Geographic list as one of the nicest lakes in the world, but people living near the lake are complaining about a strong odour coming from the body of water.

One person said it smells like a dirty, wet dog while another described it as smelling of rotten fish.

A post on the Vernon & Area Community Forum page said: "Lasts 3 days, smells like dead fish. I have lived in Coldstream most of my life and have never smelled that before."

The real question is: why does it smell so bad?

There is a range of theories from algae to breeding fish.

People have noticed the smell along the rail trail and one man who works near Kal Beach said the lake has been smelling for the past few days.

Castanet has reached out to numerous agencies to try and track down the source of the smell and as soon as we know, you will too.
