A "valuable item" RCMP reported found in a donated item of clothing from a recent widow in Penticton last week was a huge wad of cash, and thanks to the honesty of the Care Closet Thrift Store workers, it has been returned to its owner.
The money was found in the breast pocket of a sport jacket the widow had donated on Oct. 16 from her late husband.
When volunteers at the store found the bills, they immediately called RCMP, who issued a media release asking for information on who the woman may be.
"The staff said, 'This is not right,'" said John Moorhouse with the SOS Medical Foundation, one of three beneficiaries of proceeds from the shop along with the Penticton Hospital Auxiliary and the Penticton and District Hospice Society.
RCMP initially did not release the exact nature of the valuables found, asking for a woman who donated a number of clothes including sport jackets on the day in question to come forward.
Moorhouse ran into a director from the thrift shop Monday, and asked about whether the owner of the cash had been found.
"She said after the RCMP had issued the news release, the woman (who made the donation) contacted them the next day," he said.
Moorhouse added that the happy ending speaks to the integrity of the staff at the Care Closet.
