Turtles trampled on street

Kelowna residents living along Belgo Road are concerned for the safety of dozens of turtles nesting in the nearby wetland.

''Belgo Pond is an oasis for lots of wildlife and the rare painted turtle. Currently, they are nesting and when they lay their eggs, they sometimes walk across the road ... drivers don't see them, so they get run over,'' says resident David Jurome.

Jurome says more turtles than in past years have been hit this spring.

''Just this last week, three turtles have been hit. It's hard because they are the same colour as the pavement, so they may look like a rock," Jurome adds.

Several signs are posted along the wetland area, reminding motorists to keep their eyes peeled and their speeds down.

''Just slow down, and if you see a turtle on the road maybe help them along their way,'' he says.
