A man has been arrested after a stolen B.C. Transit bus was crashed into a rock wall and a Victoria home was broken into this morning (May 13).

West Shore RCMP was called around 6:42 a.m. after a bus driver returned from a break to find a B.C. Transit bus had been stolen from the stop outside Victoria General Hospital.

There were no passengers on the bus at the time, said West Shore RCMP spokeswoman Const. Nancy Saggar.

Police then got a call that a bus had smashed into a rock wall on Herbate Road near Barker Road in View Royal, a rural area about six kilometres away from the hospital. A person was seen running from the bus.

At 6:57 a.m., a resident of Herbate Road called police and said someone had broken into his home. The intruder ran away when the homeowner confronted him.

Police were on scene within minutes, searched the surrounding area and found a suspect nearby.

A 19-year-old man is in policy custody.

West Shore RCMP continue their investigation, Saggar said, and the suspect is expected to appear in court later today.

B.C. Transit said it is “aware of an incident with a bus that started at the Victoria General Hospital and ended in the Thetis Lake area this morning.”

The company said its top priority is safety and that it will be conducting an internal investigation.
