Nanaimo RCMP issued seven excessive-speeding tickets within three hours on Monday (May 27) as they pulled over vehicles going north on Highway 19 at Ware Road — the site of several recent serious traffic incidents.

One vehicle was travelling at 148 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, netting a $483 fine.

Excessive speed is defined as travelling at least 40 km/h over the speed limit.

The speed-enforcement effort took place in an 80 kilometre-per-hour zone from 6:30 to 9 a.m.

While the highest excessive speed recorded was 148 km/h, the lowest was 125 km/h.

All seven vehicles were towed and have been impounded for a minimum of seven days.

The drivers’ fines range from $368 for exceeding the limit by at least 40 km/h to $483 for exceeding the limit by at least 60 km/h.

“Drivers need to get the message,” said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’ Brien. “Speed continues to be one of the leading causes of fatal car crashes on B.C. streets and highways. Our members are doing their part and the motoring public should not be surprised to see continued speed enforcement throughout the month of May and summer months.”
