A handful of kittens are recovering after they were found abandoned in a sealed box in Maple Ridge.
Maple Ridge SPCA branch manager Krista Shaw says the driver of a pickup was waiting for a nearby train to pass, near the centre median of 113B Avenue near Airport Way. When he turned off his engine, he could hear the faint cries of kittens.
The driver brought them to the nearest shelter and a local vet treated the week-old felines for fleas and for being out in the heat.
They're currently doing well, says Shaw.
The three female kittens and one male kitten are being bottle-fed and have been placed in foster homes in pairs.
"Their eyes haven’t opened yet. They are very vocal and like to let us know when they are hungry," says Shaw.
Since abandoned and orphaned kittens need around-the-clock care, the SPCA requires donations to provide them with help.
The Maple Ridge SPCA is in need of orphaned kitten nursing bottles, powdered kitten replacement milks, Snuggle Safe heating pads, donations toward their recovery and baby receiving blankets.
Donations can be made at the branch, 10235 Jackson Rd., or online.
All kittens will be ready for adoption in eight weeks.
