Prince George RCMP nab construction zone speeders

RCMP radar

Nearly two dozen drivers who ignored the posted speed limit while passing through a construction zone in the city are now regretting their actions.

Over the span of three hours on Monday, Prince George RCMP’s municipal traffic services unit issued tickets to 23 drivers who exceeded the limit by at least 25 km/h. Police had targeted a stretch of Foothills Boulevard near Cascade Avenue where a city crew was carrying out sidewalk and intersection improvements.

RCMP are also urging drivers to "slow down and move over" when approaching workers and vehicles stopped on roadsides. More to the point, drivers must slow their speed to 70km/h when in an 80km/h or over zone and to 40km/h when in an under 50km/h zone.

If travelling on a multi-lane road, when safe to do so drivers must also move into another lane to pass stopped vehicles with a flashing light.

Failing to lower your speed or move over may result in a $173 traffic violation ticket and three points on your driver’s license.

The related legislation covers not only emergency vehicles, but maintenance workers, utility workers, land surveyors, animal control workers and garbage collectors.
