Kelowna RCMP confirmed a distraught man was taken into custody shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday (June 12) following a lengthy standoff with police at the Winfield Mobile Home Park.

Tactical members of the Emergency Response Team, with help from a police service dog, were able to apprehend the man.

The suspect was given a medical assessment at the scene, then transported to Kelowna General Hospital, where he was cleared to be held in custody.

Police  first responded to a call for service early Wednesday evening, with the ensuing investigation leading them to a home located at the trailer park.

Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says officers “encountered a Kelowna man in his 60’s alone inside the mobile home unit, who police believed to be in need of assistance, and may have access to weapons.”

A search of the man's home turned up a loaded firearm. Police continue to secure the scene.

“The Kelowna and Lake Country RCMP wish to thank all those who were directly affected by the incident for their patience, understanding and full cooperation,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.
