The District of Chetwynd is looking to add some colour and awareness to their downtown areas with the inclusion of pride and orange feather crosswalks, the latter being in remembrance of the children lost to the residential school system.
The suggestion was raised at their April 4 council meeting, after Don Titus Montessori School reached out to the district last October to see whether orange feather crosswalks could be created around town.
According to the council’s April 4 agenda package, the district has since reached out to the Tansi Friendship Centre, School District 59, and the Indigenous Advisory Council for feedback and consultation.
Seven crosswalk sites would be created, painted during the summer months for residents to enjoy, with council reaching out to local sign businesses for stencils to create the feathers.
Dawson Creek Co-op has also offered to provide paint for the pride portion of the crosswalks, according to the district agenda.
