The Canada-U.S. land border will remain closed until at least the New Year.
A tweet from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday (Dec. 11) explains COVID-19 travel restrictions in place at the Canada-U.S. land border will be extended until Jan. 21, 2021.
Trudeau says the move is to protect citizens on both sides of the border as COVID-19 cases continue to climb in Canada and the United States.
The Canada-U.S. land border was closed to non-essential travel back in March and the travel restrictions have been renewed every month since.
For the time being, tourists and cross-border visits will remain prohibited, although trade and commerce are exempted.
Certain family members and loved ones can also make a case on compassionate grounds to be allowed into Canada from the U.S. and other countries, contingent on conditions including mandatory quarantine upon arrival.
The last border ban extension was set to expire on Dec. 21, but will now be renewed through to Jan. 21 at least.
