Spring break is over, the kids are back in school, and Fort St. John RCMP are reminding motorists to slow down in school zones.
During the break, Cst. Cory Dumont met with students in the spring break camp at the Pomeroy Sport Centre, working with them to create posters to encourage drivers to obey the rules of the road.
The speed limit in school and playground zones is 30 km/h, which are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days.
Drivers caught speeding can be fined between $196 to $253, depending on their speed, police note.
"Constable Dumont and the students of Fort St John want to remind drivers to take extra care when getting back into the school routine," Cst. Chad Neustaeter noted in a news release.
"Tragedies on our roads can be prevented by slowing down in school zones, watching for all children and ensuring you yield to them in order for them to get to school and home safely."
Police are also reminding motorists to yield to students and pedestrians at crosswalks. Traffic fines for failing to yield to a pedestrian are $167.
