The City of Kelowna is investigating a pilot pop-up toilet project downtown.
It would cost about $200,000 to procure, operate and manage over a three-month period.
The fully functioning, staffed washroom would be located in the Queensway area.
Available public washrooms downtown was one of the key recommendations to come out of last year's public safety report prepared by former RCMP Supt. Bill McKinnon.
It would be operated through a social enterprise known as PEOPLE Employment Services, an initiative that provides training and paid employment opportunities for people with lived experience in homelessness or substance abuse.
The proposed structure would include a 10-foot container with two fully plumbed washrooms.
Parks Alive says it will even provide a public-use piano to help animate the space.
Staff say the pilot project will provide valuable information concerning the needs of the Queensway area prior to potentially constructing a permanent washroom facility in the next three to five years.
