Hockey teams score for food bank

Young hockey players are dodging the rink to lend their support for a good cause.

Northland Dodge, with the sponsorship of Enbridge, has relaunched its annual food drive, with the goal of collecting 50,000 pounds of food for the Salvation Army.

Driving the collection efforts are peewee hockey players, who over the next two weeks will be going door to door across the city soliciting donations.

Northland Dodge Auto Group owner Brent Marshall said about a dozen pallets of food have already been collected in the campaign's first week at Save-On Foods and Costco.

"It's something we do for youth," said Marshall, who has made the initiative a provision of making donations to the team.

"I will sponsor you, but you have to do something good for society," he said.

Players will be door knocking on weeknights and weekends until Nov. 6, which also gets the young people out in the fresh air and exercising, said Marshall.

Those who greet the players at their doors or return home to find a flyer indicating they were visited, can drop donations off at any Northland location (Nissan, Dodge, Hyundai).
