A man is in custody after allegedly taking a run at police while behind the wheel of a dump truck.

Zachary Gerald Apperloo has been charged with motor vehicle theft, dangerous driving, fleeing police, mischief to property over $5,000 and two counts each of assault with a weapon and breaching a release order from the alleged April 2 incident in Smithers, according to court records.

In a statement, RCMP said they responded to a report of possible impaired operation of articulated dump truck (rock truck) at about 9 p.m.

Apperloo is alleged to have tried to collide with a police vehicle.

"Due to the escalation of potential grievous harm to police as a result, shots were fired by police. Luckily, nobody was injured and police were able to stop the suspect," RCMP said.

Apperloo was arrested under the Mental Health Act but subsequently charged under the Criminal Code. He also continues to face charges of assault with a weapon, dangerous driving, fleeing police and driving while disqualified under the Criminal Code from an alleged Feb. 2 incident in Smithers.
