The BC SPCA says it is continuing services for animals in need in Fort St. John as it conducts a structural review of its facility, now temporarily closed.

Craig Daniell, chief executive officer for the BC SPCA, said the organization took the step to close the facility out of an “abundance of caution” to ensure the safety of staff, volunteers, animals and the public.

“We had recently engaged consultants to make recommendations regarding a potential expansion and upgrade to our North Peace shelter to support our services for animals in the community,” he said in a release. “During an inspection of the facility, some concerns were identified regarding the structural condition of the facility.”

Animals are being cared for by foster families and at off-site kennels during the closure, according to the SPCA.

Daniell says the organization has engaged a structural engineer to provide a detailed assessment of the facility.

“Once we receive the structural report we will be in a better position to assess next steps and how we can best serve animals in the community.”

The SPCA says calls have been redirected and voicemails are received via the branch email to ensure staff working off-site can respond to animal-related issues in the community.

“Our services have continued and we remain committed to serving the needs of North Peace animals and pet guardians.”
