The inaugural Sirens Cup charity hockey game was a blazing success.

The Prince George Firefighters earned bragging rights, defeating the Prince George RCMP 9-5 in the game Saturday afternoon at Kopar Memorial Arena, but local charities were the big winners.

The event raised $1,775 for each of the RCMP Victim Services Unit and the Prince George Firefighters Local 1372 Charitable Society.

RCMP superintendent Shaun Wright bucked up his $50 contribution to Prince George Fire Rescue chief Cliff Warner after losing a friendly wager on the game’s outcome. Wright also had to wear a firefighters jersey as part of the bargain.

The game was part of a hockey doubleheader that led into the Spruce Kings-Penticton Vees B.C. Hockey League game.

“This is the first time in a very long time that police officers and firefighters have played against one another in a hockey game here in Prince George, and it’s clear from the response we received that the community was just as excited as we were to have this match-up happen,” said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, media relations officer for the Prince George RCMP.

The Victim Services Unit provides emotional and counseling support for victims of crime and their families. Two full-time staff members and 20 volunteers help with court orientation and accompaniment, provide updates on court cases, referrals to social agencies, crisis intervention and community outreach.

The Firefighter Charity contributes to national fundraising programs like the Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s Boot Drive, and also supports the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation and the BC Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.
