REGINA — Saskatchewan firefighters say they are opposed to proposed legislation that would allow local governments to order fire departments to burn down derelict buildings owned by municipalities.
Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs president Mike Kwasnica says live burns could pose significant health and safety risks, as many of these buildings contain asbestos, lead-based paint and other toxic materials.
He says releasing such substances into the air would cause long-term health effects on firefighters and nearby residents.
Louis Cherpin from the Saskatchewan Volunteer Firefighters Association says the provincial government should reconsider the legislative changes and consult with firefighters.
The province has said it's creating a pilot project where volunteer firefighters conduct building burns as part of training exercises.
Government Relations Minister Eric Schmalz has said the bill lays the framework for the pilot project and that there will be further consultations before plans are implemented.
