Cougars take Anderson with third pick in draft

No surprise Giants grab record-setting Benson

The Prince George Cougars selected defenceman Josh Anderson of Duncan third overall in the 2013 WHL bantam draft being held in Calgary.

Anderson is six-foot-three, 190 pounds and played for the bantam AAA Cowichan Valley Capitals in the VIAHA league last season.

With the top pick in the draft the Vancouver Giants took Tyler Benson who set the new standards in goals and points in the Alberta bantam league with the SSAC Lions of Edmonton last season. Tyler Steel of Sherwood Park went second overall to the Regina Pats.

In the second round (24th overall) the Cougars took right winger Kody McDonald of Lethbridge. McDonald played with the Pursuit of Excellence bantam 1 team in Kelowna the last two seasons.

Kolby Johnson of Kerrobert, Sask., was snagged by the Cats in the third round (52nd overall) and after sitting out the fourth round the Cougars took Lane Zablocki with the 109th pick of the fifth round. Johnson is a left winger while Zablocki is a natural centre.

The draft resumes this afternoon with Rounds 6-15. Prince George has two selections in the sixth round - 117 and 118 - picked up from Moose Jaw and Lethbridge, respectively.
