RCMP have confirmed a man is in custody after five people were stabbed at a bush party outside Kelowna overnight.

Police were called at around 2 a.m. Sunday for a report of multiple stabbing victims at an outdoor party on Postill Lake Road.

“Officers flooded the area and located five victims suffering from stab wounds. The two male youths, and three adult men were transported to hospital for treatment. The severity of their injuries is not being disclosed at this time,” Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy said in a brief statement.

Noseworthy says an adult male has been arrested and is currently behind bars.

“It is not believed there is any ongoing risk to the public,” she said. “Further information will be released as soon as possible.”

RCMP did not release any information on motive, but the father of one of the victims told Castanet his son was one of several people who tried to intervene in an assault on a teenage girl. The incident happened near the 8 km marker of Postill Lake Road.

Stu Grabos said his son was stabbed on his right side.

"Whatever he got stabbed with just missed his liver and his kidney," Grabos said.

Grabos told Castanet a group of Grade 12 students were having a bonfire at a location up Postill Lake Road.

According to Grabos, they were near the 8 km marker when another male joined the gathering. This man allegedly began beating up a girl.

“That’s when my son and his buddies all stepped in. My son got stabbed first,” he said, adding that he believes five other boys were stabbed.

Grabos said everyone was transported from the 8 km marker to the zero kilometre marker on Postill where they met with police and ambulance services.

Police are in the evidence-gathering phase of this investigation and are requesting that anyone with information call the RCMP at 250-768-2880.

B.C. Emergency Health Services said earlier Sunday six people were taken to hospital after the incident, and RCMP did not explain the cause of the sixth person’s injuries.
