A new gym has opened at Upper Halfway Elementary School, with construction complete on the accessible gymnasium.
The school was originally built in 1960 but was constructed without a gym.
"We're excited by the opportunities the new gym will bring for our students at Upper Halfway and the community in general," said Helen Gilbert, chair of the Peace River North board of education. "The gym will allow for expanded physical education offerings year round."
The new space is also open to the entire Upper Halfway community, and includes features such as a food counter to encourage community gatherings.
The province put forward $5.7 million for the gym, with Peace River North School District contributing $29,000. Upper Halfway sees students from kindergarten to Grade 10.
The 2023 provincial budget has set aside $3.4 billion for school capital projects over the next three years, including new and expanded schools, seismic upgrades and replacements, and land purchases for future schools
