Nanaimo has been chosen to host the 55+ B.C. Games in 2025.

“Nanaimo has a long history of successfully hosting high-profile, multi-sport games and we are well known for our hospitality, volunteerism and excellent sporting facilities,” Mayor Leonard Krog said Tuesday.

The city and Tourism Nanaimo partnered to bid on the event. Backers included the Snuneymuxw First Nation, Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools and local sports organizations.

“As a community we strongly believe sports are an important part of our Nation’s community wellness for all ages and stages of life,” said William Yoachim, acting chief of Snuneymuxw First Nation.

“Snuneymuxw has a long history of developing several well-known athletes in various sports and is looking forward to welcoming thousands of athletes and officials from all around the province to our beautiful territory.”

Nanaimo previously hosted the games in 2007. A 2022 economic-impact report estimated that the games have a $6.5-million impact on host communities, a City of Nanaimo statement said Tuesday.

The 2025 games will run over five days, Sept. 9 to 13, in 2025, with about 3,500 athletes expected to attend.

They will feature opening and closing ceremonies, a dance and up to 30 different sports events staged throughout Nanaimo, including swimming and slo-pitch.
