Fifty-four animals were seized from a property in North Vernon after the B.C. SPCA received complaints the animals had been left unattended and were improperly cared for with inadequate food, water and shelter.

The 46 horses, four dogs and four hogs were taken from the property yesterday, March 25, according to a press release from the animal rights organization. The seizure came after B.C. SPCA constables issued orders for changes earlier in the month, senior officer Eileen Driver says in the release.

“We have monitored the situation and requested daily documentation that the orders were being met," she says in the release. "Unfortunately, we were not satisfied that the owner had made the necessary changes and sought a warrant to remove the animals.”

The animals are now in multiple undisclosed locations across the Okanagan receiving care and medical examinations.
