Local Mounties are warning computer users...so anyone reading this...about alerts asking for payment to fix their computer.

In a press release, Kamloops RCMP describes an incident early this year where a person's computer "froze" and an alert was generated, asking for money to fix the issue. The person agreed and gave a credit card number to the software company "NAVSAM Systems Ltd."

The card was then charged multiple times, racking up $18,000.

The same person had a similar situation occur more recently, this one involving the computer's firewall, and was suspicious. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre was alerted to the issue.

Kamloops RCMP is warning people to not fall for the same scam, advising people to not click links in fake alert messages and don't call phone numbers. Instead, contact the software's company or a security software company and reboot the computer.
