Highway 99 reopened after mudlside cleared

Road open only for essential travel; truck transports banned from using highway
N.Pemberton slide
Pemberton Search and Rescue crews responded to the scene of a mudslide along the Duffey Lake Road portion of Highway 99 on Nov. 15.

The province on Saturday reopened Highway 99 for essential travel between Pemberton and Lillooet, after clearing a mudslide that was blocking the road near Duffy Lake.

Weight restrictions are in place for the steep mountainous section of highway, known for its sharp curves and narrow roadwidth, which becomes especially hazardous in winter conditions. Only vehicles which have a gross vehicle weight less than 14,500 kilograms are allowed through and it is still unsafe for commercial truck traffic.

A series of rainstorms earlier in the week brought on the slide that closed the road on Wednesday. The Ministry of Transportation will be monitoring road conditions and official warn Highway 99 could be closed at any time. Essential motorists should be prepared and carry extra clothing, food and water and a full tank of gas before venturing out on the highway.
