The City of Fort St. John is reviewing vandalism impacts to their municipal facilities and parks, with city council receiving a report during their Feb. 26 meeting. 23 incidents were reported in 2023, with 70 percent related to outdoor vandalism and 30 percent being indoor.

Washrooms in local parks experienced the most repeated damage last year, accounting for 27 per cent of the reported incidents, with damages estimated at $8,100. That figure does not factor in the cost for city staff to further research and arrange completion of the repairs.

Security was also hired by city staff last year for approximately $30,000 annually to patrol Centennial Park, Mathews Park, the Rotary Skate Park, and their off-leash dog park for up to eight hours a day.

The city is also trying to address violent youth crime through the Building Safer Communities initiative, a three-year program financially supported by the federal government.
