Two light earthquakes reported near Fort St. John

Two light earthquakes near Fort St. John reported within four days of each other

Earthquakes Canada is reporting a 4.5-magnitude earthquake northwest of Fort St. John on Tuesday evening.

It’s the second earthquake greater than 4.0 on the Richter scale recorded near the city in less than a week. A 4.7-magnitude quake was reported last Friday Nov. 11.

Tuesday’s event was reported around 7:40 p.m. local time about 131 kilometres northwest of the city, according to Earthquakes Canada, at a depth of 9.5 kilometres.

Last Friday’s 4.7ML event was reported around 9:10 a.m. in the same area, about 133 kilometres northwest of the city. It happened at a depth of about 8.2 kilometres, according to Earthquakes Canada.

The agency is reporting both were felt by people in the area.

“There are no reports of damage, and none would be expected,” it said of both events.
