The Dawson Creek RCMP say they've successfully arrested and pressed charges against two Dawson Creek men involved in a daylight break and enter to an oil and gas well site in One Island Lake area, with the help of Police Dog Services.
RCMP were alerted to the break and enter on March 3 around 10 am while it was in progress and were also informed the site had break in the say before. The two men immediately fled into the surroundings woods, upon the police's arrival, noted a press release.
Following footprints in the snow, they located James Shearer, age 36, hiding in a nearby shed, and a successful dog track lead to the apprehension of Wayne Conley, age 45.
"The Dawson Creek RCMP would like to thank the diligent operators who alerted police to the illegal activity as well as police dog services and police canine, Hamer," noted the release. While spelt with one M only, the dog's name is pronounced 'Hammer'.
Further investigation revealed Shearer and Conley had arrived in a stolen vehicle and caused thousands of dollars in damage to the well site.
Shearer was charged with break and enter, possession of stolen property, mischief over $5,000, breach of a probation order and resisting a Peace Officer. Conley was charged with break and enter, mischief over $5000, possession of stolen property and resisting a Peace Officer. Both have several outstanding warrants in Alberta for similar offences.
