A Kamloops man was arrested over the weekend after trying to steal from an off-duty police officer, Mounties say.

Just after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, police said, an off-duty officer was stopped in traffic on Columbia Street at Third Avenue when he was approached by a man.

“There man allegedly approached the vehicle from the south, tried to open its rear passenger door and told its occupants to give him their stuff,” RCMP Const. Crystal Evelyn said in a news release.

“An off-duty police officer emerged from inside and arrested the man, holding him in custody until on-duty officers arrived.”

The man told investigators he mistook the vehicle for another and said he thought he’d been waved over.

Evelyn said the suspect was released once the investigation had concluded.
