SkyTrain assault nets 21 days jail time

A Vancouver man will spend 21 days in jail for assaulting a man at an East Vancouver SkyTrain station.

David Scott Richards pleaded guilty to assault and uttering threats before Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Gregory Rideout.

Crown prosecutor Jacinta Lawton told the court Richards was at the Commercial and Broadway SkyTrain Station July 27, when he started screaming and yelling at people.

Officers were called to the scene and soon found a man in the middle of calling 911. He told police he had been punched in the face, Lawton said. The man pointed out Richards nearby and he was arrested.

Lawton said the victim later qualified what he said, saying Richards came within an inch of his face. She said that still qualifies as an assault.

“He said he was really scared, feared for his safety,” she said.

The prosecutor said Richards has past convictions, including assault. There was an instance in August where he was yelling outside a Chilliwack store and “showed his penis in public,” Lawton said.

“There were some children there,” she said, adding the man was a possible threat to the public.

Lawton requested Richards be given between 30 and 60 days jail time.

In addition to the 21 days of jail time, the judge also put Richards on nine months probation without reporting conditions.

“You don’t do very well on reporting,” Rideout told the man. “Just a waste of taxpayers’ money.”
