ST. JOHN'S — A large wildfire on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula has destroyed nine homes in the small town of Small Point-Adam's Cove-Blackhead-Broad Cove.

In a social media post late Friday, the town confirmed the homes had been lost and it said local officials were in the process of contacting the property owners.

The town, one of eight communities under evacuation orders, says the Kingston wildfire is expected to increase today due to elevated winds, high temperatures and lower humidity.

RCMP confirmed Friday they are investigating the cause of the fire burning near the town and are seeking surveillance footage from residents on the west side of Conception Bay.

The Kingston wildfire, burning out of control on the western shore of Conception Bay, is currently about 28 square kilometres in size, according to the province’s online active wildfire dashboard.

Firefighting efforts in the province are expected to get a boost this weekend with the arrival of four water bombers and 60 firefighters from Quebec.
