Do you want your very own BC Ferry? One's for sale and it's surprisingly cheap

Could it become an ocean-going mobile home?

Need your own way to commute back and forth between the Island and mainland in a car? Want to create the ultimate houseboat? Interested in creating a high-seas tennis tournament?

The Powell River Queen just finished 58 years of work on B.C.'s coast and since it's a ship and can't retire like an employee, it's being sold.

The little car ferry was the oldest of BC Ferries' fleet until earlier this week when it made its last run between Campbell River and Quadra Island. Now that it's done working for the government, it's up for sale on the website IronPlanet, run by broker Ritchie Bros.

The listing for the Powell River Queen says the highest offer so far has been $82,000. BC Ferries is leaving the closing date for the sale of the ferry open, so higher offers may be made through IronPlanet.

The listing notes the ferry can hold 400 passengers and 61 vehicles. It also has a massive gallery of photos taken of and on the ferry, for anyone who wants a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic ferry.

"While it will be retired from our fleet, we hope to see it continue to be used for ongoing trade," states a BC Ferries spokesperson.

Right now it's listed as being docked at Quadra Island.

58 years of service on B.C.'s coast

Built in Victoria in 1965, it originally ran between Earl's Cove and Saltery Bay on the Sunshine Coast. In 1991 it moved; ever since it's been running between the Gulf Island and Vancouver Island.

"Thank you to all our staff and crew who maintained and sailed on the Powell River Queen, connecting coastal communities for over half a century," tweeted BC Ferries after its last run on Jan. 17.
