Prince George Spruce Kings forward Corey Cunningham goes in on net against the check of Chilliwack Chiefs defender Nathan Kelly on Saturday night at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.

The Chilliwack Chiefs gained a split of their two-game weekend B.C. Hockey League series against the Prince George Spruce Kings Saturday, doubling the Kings 2-1 at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.

Goalie Mathieu Caron was a big part of the victory as the game’s first star after he stopped 35 of 36 shots he faced in net for the Chiefs.

All of the scoring happened in the first period.

The Kings struck first at 3:25 into the game. Nicholas Poisson scored his fourth of the year, hooking up with Corey Cunningham and Nolan Welsh on a Prince George power play. For Welsh, the Kings’ captain, it was his fourth point of the weekend. He scored all three goals Friday in a 3-2 triumph over the Chiefs.

The lead lasted until the 17-minute mark, when Peter Reynolds finished off a Chiefs’ power-play chance for his sixth of the season. Reynolds, 16, has been picked to play next month for Canada in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Medicine Hat and Swift Current.

The winner came 61 seconds after Reynolds scored. Brody Gagno put it away for the Chiefs, beating Kings goalie Jett Alexander.

The Kings went 1-for-7 on the power play while Chilliwack scored once on three opportunities. The shots ended up 36-23 in favour of the Kings.

Attendance at RMCA was 798.

The Kings will head down Highway 97 Wednesday to Powell River, where they’ll play the other Kings of the BCHL on Thursday, followed by games in Victoria Saturday night and at Cowichan Valley Sunday afternoon.

In Penticton, the Nanaimo Clippers handed the Vees their fourth straight loss, beating them 4-1 Saturday at South Okanagan Events Centre. The Vees, who got off to a perfect 11-0 start this season, began the weekend Friday with a 2-1 loss on home ice to the Vernon Vipers. That followed consecutive road losses the previous weekend in Alberni Valley (4-0) and on Wednesday in Salmon Arm (5-2).
