The South Kamloops Titans racked up their air miles on the junior varsity football field Saturday.
They were frequent fliers into the end zone at Masich Place Stadium and they hammered the College Heights Cougars 42-0 in a B.C. Secondary School Football Association quarterfinal playoff.
The Titans scored on their opening drive and capitalized on a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to put the Cougars down by two majors early in the game.
"They were all over us from the beginning, they were a better team," said Cougars head coach Tommy Heinzelman. "We struggled out of the gate, they came out hard and physical and we didn't. They ran it with (running back Deegan Falsetta's) off-tackle runs through our d-line and ran up the middle on us and that was it.
"They blocked. Their offensive line controlled our d-line and they got to the second level. I thought we would stop their run a lot better, but I guess not."
College Heights quarterback Isaak Slavik and his receiving corps struggled to make connections and under pressure from the Titans' rush the Cougar offence never got untracked. It didn't help that the health of one of their top players, fullback Taeman Pidocke, deteriorated and he was forced to drop out of the game in the second quarter.
"We had some chances, we had a couple wide-open passes we didn't complete," said Heinzelman. "They were coming up to defend the run so much and our quarterback through a good ball but our receiver couldn't get to it and make the catch. We made some good passes but didn't convert with the receptions and it killed us. Not that we had a shot but it could have been a lot closer at halftime."
The Titans led 35-0 at the break.
Masich is also hosting two double-A varsity games today at Masich. The Nechako Valley Vikings of Vanderhoof were playing Windsor Dukes of North Vancouver in a game that started at 1:30 p.m. Then at 5:30 p.m., the P.G. Bowl-champion College Heights Cougars are playing the Clarence Fulton Maroons of Vernon in the other wild-card playoff.
The junior varsity Cougars had just five returning players and the bulk of the roster from last year's North Division champions moved up to play for the double-A varsity team. The College Heights JVs went 3-1 in the season and defeated the favoured Duchess Park Condors 26-24 last week in the junior P.G. Bowl at Masich.
"It was a good season, we got a lot better and beating Duchess in the city final was a huge accomplishment," said Heinzelman. "But we came out flat today."
The Titans, who finished second in the Interior Conference, will advance to the provincial semifinal against the winner of the Ballenas-Robert Bateman quarterfinal to be played Wednesday in Parksville
