The scourge of sexy mom costumes

In a discussion with my husband the other day, I was musing about how much I admire activists and volunteers and how I was a bit at a loss to find something that I believed in strongly enough to march and protest and volunteer.

In a discussion with my husband the other day, I was musing about how much I admire activists and volunteers and how I was a bit at a loss to find something that I believed in strongly enough to march and protest and volunteer.

We then tried to list the various things that made us furious and for me, it was misused quotation marks and for my husband, it was people in the banking drive-thru who, instead of just getting cash at the ATM, proceeded to do twenty-minutes worth of banking rather than going inside to monopolize the drive-thru lineup.

Feeling rather satisfied with our self-righteousness, we then proceeded to discuss our plans for Halloween and what the kids might want to dress-up as this year.

We started looking at costume ideas and a white-hot rage began to take over me. Page after page of Halloween costumes of happy families all in their Halloween costumes. In every single advertisement, there was a happy dad, happy mom and two kids in their costumes.Every single mom costume was "sexy."

I have found my cause.

Family of police officers with a sexy police mom.Family of pirates with a sexy pirate mom.

Sexy ghost mom.

Sexy chef mom.

Sexy superhero mom.

Sexy zombie mom.

Sexy nurse mom.

Sexy S.W.A.T. costume.

Sexy firefighter.

Sexy army girl.

Sexy cowgirl costume.

Not in one group costume was there a normal, female "career" costume. All of the adult women costumes were highly-sexualized and not a small number were fairly ridiculous (sexy ninja, come on).

Forgive me if I am wrong but I thought that family Halloween costumes were for going trick-or-treating with your family or for going to a party - with your family.I found myself thinking that these moms in the photos would be awfully cold in their fishnet stockings and corsets (as a nurse) trick-or-treating in Prince George.

If it is socially normal for all women to have sexy costumes, why then is it not okay for the girls to be in sexy costumes?People would be outraged at an eight-year girl trick-or-treating as sexy schoolgirl than they seem to be for an adult woman dressed as such.

You wouldn't see an eight-year old boy dressed as a sexy nurse or doctor.

Why is this normal? Can't a woman dress up as a nurse rather than a sexy nurse? Does a real lady firefighter wear a skin-tight leotard to fight fires in? There was a woman dressed as Freddy Kruger in the advertisement - and she was in a skin tight shirt, wearing a come hither expression while covered in stage blood. This is completely insane.

If a woman wants to dress in a sexy costume for a party, fine. They have the right to choose to do so and I am happy to support your choice.

I have a problem with the marketing to families that include only women in sexy costumes. The men aren't dressed sexy. The men are dressed as firefighters, or police officers or zombies. The costumes are not sexy.

Can't one mom in an advertisement be dressed in a giant chicken costume and happy about it?Not a sexy chicken.Just a giant chicken with feathers and wings.Wear your chicken costume and waddle past the sexy freezing ninja woman and be warm.

Wear your feathers with pride.
