Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Prince George this evening.

Conditions are favourable for an electrical storm that could produce lightning, heavy rain, large hailstones and strong wind gusts. Between 10 and 15 millimetres of rain could hit the city with 20 kilometre per hour winds from the southwest, gusting to 70 km/hr.

The stormy start to the Canada Day long weekend will mean the risk of thunderstorm activity will continue overnight. There’s a 60 per cent chance of showers on Saturday with the risk of a tinderstorm and a high of only 17 C expected, about four degrees cooler than normal.

The sun should return on Sunday with clear skies and a high of 22 C predicted, and a mix of sun and cloud is expected on Monday with a high of 22 C. The overnight low will be 9 C the next three nights.

The rainy month of June will come to an end on Tuesday and nothing but sunshine is on the way. Daytime heating will raise the mercury to 23 C, also the predicted high for a sunny Canada Day on Wednesday.

Nearly a week after the summer solstice, these are among the longest days of the year. The sun rose today at 4:41 a.m. and sunrise is at 9:47 p.m.
