Schools are closed to students in B.C. but learning will continue at home now that teachers are back on the job after a two-week spring break.

There will be no face-to-face instruction due the threat of COVID-19 transmission but teachers are already preparing their learning plans to be sent later this week using online connections to get through to their students.

The provincial government is trying to encourage students and their parents to take an active role in learning and the education ministry has developed a website – Keep LearningBC to help make that happen.

The site is a collection of resources to support what the students will learn from their teachers while they are away from their schools during the COVID-19 crisis.

It advises parents to get their children used to a regular schedule to do their school work, working in a quiet well-lighted room using a table or desks set at the proper height.

It suggests activities to develop skills in literacy, numeracy, personal/social awareness and cultural identity.

The site directs users to websites such as the Knowledge Network and its free video library, online library resources, Virtual Museum Canada and other educational websites, some of which are specific to each school subject.

There’s also a keep healthy section which outlines how kids can protect themselves from the coronavirus.

Keep LearningBC was launched on Friday and after some technical problems that resulted in the website crashing, it is back on stream at openschool.bc.ca/keeplearning/.
