A stretch of Third Avenue has been reopened after city workers were called in to deal with a burst water main.

First noticed on Thursday evening, and located between Victoria and Brunswick streets, the break flooded nearby streets and sidewalks.

Nearby businesses were also without water service for a time.

The water was shut off at about 7:30 p.m. and workers began an excavation and worked throughout the night to replace a 1.5-metre section of the cast iron pipe, which dates back to 1956, with a new plastic main.

Water was back on at about 2 a.m. and the repair was completed at about 3:45 a.m.

It's expected the section will be repaved next week.

"The City of Prince George thanks residents, motorists, and the businesses in the area for their patience and understanding while this operation was carried out."
