In an effort to raise funds for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, CopperFalls Custom Homes committed to donate proceeds from a newly built home at 2759 Links Drive in the Aberdeen Glen subdivision.

Earlier this week, The Copper Project stakeholders were pleased to present $90,000 to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation as the home has been completed and sold.

With all suppliers and trades on board, Copper Falls director Jeff Stewart said this kind of project has been on the radar for a couple of years and all it took was a little collaboration to make it happen.

"It's great to give back to a community who support the work we do, the opportunity to engage others in the project just made sense," Brent Scheck, co-owner of Copper Falls Custom Homes, said.

Scheck Construction and Sequoia Signature Homes came together in April 2017, to be known moving forward as Copper Falls Custom Homes. Scheck and Stewart started making a plan for the Copper Project soon after they amalgamated their businesses and guaranteed a minimum donation of $20,000 to the healthcare foundation, which they've donated to kick off the project.

"We just wanted to help in some way," Stewart said. "We know that healthcare touches everyone at some point."

A portion of the funds donated by the Copper Project will go to a dedicated maternal operating room because Prince George sees more than 1,150 babies born each year and many are considered high risk, which include C-section births. Having a dedicated maternity operating room at UHNBC means that other surgeries won't be postponed or canceled when an emergency birthing situation arises. The room will be open before the end of 2018.

Another portion of the funds will go to breast health imaging equipment. State of the art equipment has been purchased to create a one-stop breast health imaging centre at the hospital and the need for more equipment is ongoing.

And finally, funds will go to ortho video operating room towers. Orthopedic surgeons for the region have long patient wait lists for those who need hip and knee replacements or repairs to rotator cuff tears, and repetitive strain injuries that see the patient suffering with pain. Newer, state-of-the-art operating equipment would allow better imaging during surgery, resulting in faster healing time and less invasive surgeries, which would benefit the patient to a greater degree.

"Words cannot express how deeply thankful all of us at the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation are for the generosity in support of the Copper Project," Judy Neiser, CEO, said. "The collaborative approach and unprecedented concept that this project entailed is beyond innovative and although for many of you, you may just consider it something you just do, to all of us and to healthcare in the region it goes far beyond that. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for your role in this project and your contribution. We are deeply humbled and grateful."
