The provincial government souped-up B.C.'s rules of the road Tuesday with what it claims are Canada's "most immediate and severe" measures against drunk drivers.

Set to take effect this fall, the changes to B.C.'s Motor Vehicle Act are designed to make it easier and quicker for police to take impaired drivers off the road while increasing the time and expense it takes for those caught to get back behind the wheel.

"I think what we're looking at is the ability for a police officer to have more tools at his or her disposal - and the ability, hopefully, to be more efficient - in dealing with an impaired driver," said Sgt. Pat McTiernan of North District Traffic Services. "We're looking forward to trying it out."
