The public will have a chance to have their say on a proposed rezoning to allow a cannabis store at the site of the former College Heights Liquor Store off Domano Boulevard.

On Monday city council approved the first two readings of the rezoning for the building at 5787 Albert Pl.

Normally a public hearing will be held for the rezoning, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic city council is avoiding holding public hearings unless mandatory under provincial legislation. City general manager of administrative services Walter Babicz said instead of the hearing, residents can express their views on the rezoning in writing.

Written submissions will be put before city council before final reading of the bylaw is considered for approval, he said.

"We're still going to have public input, and I appreciate it," Coun. Brian Skakun said.

MJB Cannabis is proposing to open a 128 sq. metre cannabis store in the portion of the building which was previously a liquor store, according to a city report to council. The other section of the building was the now-closed Don Cherry Sports Grill, and previously the College Heights Pub prior to that.

The cannabis store is proposing to be open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.

Members of the public can send their feedback to the city by emailing cityclerk@princegeorge.ca or by mailing it to the Development Services Division at 1100 Patricia Blvd., Prince George, V2L 3V9.
