A quick-thinking citizen aided RCMP in chasing down a man suspected of breaking into homes and vehicles in College Heights early Sunday morning.

Davin Gray Jokinen, 28, has been charged with seven counts including possessing a break-in instrument and two counts of resisting arrest.

He was arrested at about 2:30 a.m., a bit less than an hour after RCMP were called to a report of a stranger leaving a driveway on Dalhousie Drive.

Within minutes, a suspect matching the description was found breaking into a vehicle near the corner of McGill Crescent and Simon Fraser Drive, according to RCMP.

As an officer approached, the suspect took off through a back yard, down an embankment and across Highway 16 and a motorist who was heading down Peden Hill and saw the foot chase stopped and offered a ride to the pursuing officer to a more advantageous location down the hill.

Meanwhile, an RCMP dog and handler had been called in and tracked the suspect through brush, over fences and even onto the roof of a commercial storage facility along Highway 16, leaving a trail of personal and stolen items, according to police.

The dog found the suspect hiding under a trailer on Hollandia Drive, RCMP said, and despite the dog and officers, he continued to resist but was soon taken into custody.

Police said Jokinen is relatively new to Prince George and previously resided in Quesnel and Dawson Creek but is well known to police in all three communities.

"The Prince George RCMP want to thank the member of the public that took the time to offer assistance during this incident," RCMP said.
