A man drowned Friday after he slipped and fell into the Robson River while hiking along the lower section of the Berg Lake trail.

Valemount RCMP said the 53-year-old visitor from China was with two others but neither was able to reach him as he was swept away by the fast-moving water. His body was recovered about 800 metres downstream.

A German tourist drowned in the same area in June 2019.

"The water moves extremely fast in this area of the river and tragedy, such as this, can happen in seconds," said Cpl Jacob Joslin. "The RCMP would like to remind people to be extra vigilant when hiking near water."
