A weekend of roadside police checks succeeded in removing local drivers from the road who were dangerously impaired.

The road checks were conducted by Prince George RCMP Municipal Traffic Section and General Duty Section.

"(Prince George detachment) RCMP officers conducted road checks, traffic stops in key areas, and responded to reports of impaired drivers," said Const. David Hallmark, spokesperson for the initiative.

"In total, 17 drivers, who were impaired or effected by alcohol or drugs were removed from the roadway."

Two of the 17 were charged under the Criminal Code for impaired driving.

Six were issued 90-day driving prohibitions, which includes a mandatory 30-day impound.

Nine were cited for other Motor Vehicle Act prohibitions related to impairment by alcohol or drugs.

Hallmark said "The Prince George RCMP will continue to be focusing on impaired driving" so motorists could expect more safety initiatives like this in the immediate future.
