Prince George Fire Rescue firefighters were able to contain a fire that broke out in the basement of a Highglen neighbourhood home early Tuesday morning.

Crews from three halls were called to 207 Gordon Crescent at about 5:15 a.m. and were able to make quick entry, PGFR assistant captain Kevin Woodhouse said in a press release.

Residents at home of the time were able to escape with some smoke inhalation and one was taken to hospital with minor injuries but firefighters were unable to resuscitate two family dogs caught in the blaze.

"The quick responses of the fire fighters kept the fire damage to this home confined to the initial room of origin," Woodhouse added. "Prince George Fire Rescue cannot emphasize to the public enough the importance of having working smoke detectors and alarm systems."
