When told that all access to property had been cut off due to a wildfire evacuation order, one Fraser Lake resident placed a key phone call to the RCMP.

"Fraser Lake RCMP were advised by a home owner of explosives that were on the property," said Cpl. Madonna Saunderson, a spokesperson for northern B.C.'s Mounties.

The warning was called in on Thursday, and by the next morning, the potential explosion had been averted.

"RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) from the Lower Mainland was called to attend and neutralize the explosives," Saunderson said. "They were safely disposed of, no fuss no muss, no harm to anyone."

Getting the EDU to attend to a northern site is no simple matter. "They are based out of the Lower Mainland," said Saunderson, so they have to be flown in to do their specialized work.

"The main thing is no one was hurt and the issue is no longer a threat to anyone," said Saunderson.

"The Fraser Lake Volunteer Fire Department was present to assist if needed as everyone's safety is always our priority when dealing with situations such as this."

Police did not disclose the nature of the explosives or the condition in which they were stored.

Saunderson emphasized that there were some explosives that are legal to own under strict conditions, usually for industrial purposes. She said she had not been made aware of any pending charges or further investigation in this matter.
